Chapter Seventeen

Having lots of extended family in Abundance came in so handy. Samantha hadn’t had a bit of trouble finding a truck to borrow for her Saturday mission. Her cousin Hank, who worked at the hardware store downtown, had been happy to trade vehicles with her for the day. His big black truck was perfect for her plan to pick up patio furniture.

Not just any patio furniture. The most darling set that she’d found online. Too bad the delivery charge would have been more than the cost of the furniture, but she had the whole day. Driving to St. Louis to pick up the table and four chairs was no trouble at all, thanks to Hank.

Of course, the weather could have been more cooperative. It was pouring. But the furniture was going to sit outside anyway. A little rain on the way home wouldn’t hurt it.

But first, before she picked it up, she needed lunch. She pulled through a drive-thru, thankful for the canopy over the pickup window, and then parked at the back of the lot to enjoy her sub sandwich.

While she ate, she pulled up the weather on her phone. It looked as if it was going to rain all day, but tomorrow looked nice. Maybe she’d text Lucas to see if he was free for lunch. They could even use her new patio furniture.

He’d come by three times over the past week, each time bringing her a new barbecue treat to try, saying she needed to learn to appreciate the finer nuances of dry rubs. As much as she protested last weekend at Abby’s house, Lucas was growing on her. He wasn’t pushing her to be more than friends, and he’d kept enough physical distance between them that she hadn’t felt that electricity again. He was so humble—the complete opposite of Reg. Plus, he made her laugh and made her join him in being fully in the moment of whatever they were doing. And Abby was right. The man was awfully easy on the eyes.

Anyway, with all the food he’d brought her, she should cook something for him. Sunday lunch seemed perfect. Not a time of day that meant it was a date. Friends had lunch, right? And he didn’t work on Sundays until five. She could fix something when she got up, like a quiche, so it could be ready quickly after she got home from church. Or was quiche too feminine a dish to serve a male friend for lunch?

She read a few recipes online and checked her email, nibbling on her sub.

Junk, junk, no, that totally looked like a scam, and—

What in the world?

She read the email, lowering her sandwich to the wrapper on her lap.

This couldn’t be right.

Three of the biggest fans of Norware Games, part of the group who’d been sent the new game early for bug testing, said it wouldn’t load.

She’d been the one who emailed them. Had she sent the wrong link?

Her stomach grew tighter as she grabbed her phone and dialed.
